Overview

This presentation introduces the multi-hazard and compound events dimension of complex risk, and complements the broader multi-risk overview that follows. It covers three areas:

  • Compound event concepts and typologies, including preconditioned, multivariate, temporally compounding, and spatially compounding events, and how these categories describe combinations of hazards and drivers that co-occur or cascade in space and time

  • Methodological challenges specific to each typology, and the statistical and copula-based approaches used for compound event analysis

  • Recent examples of compound events that illustrate these concepts and challenges
